Why Swimming Lessons for Preschoolers Saves Lives

Playing in the water is a great way for children to have fun. And yet every year, tragically, many preschoolers and older children tragically drown or are seriously injured. This is why pool safety and swimming lessons for preschoolers is so important.

My own son, at age 14 months almost died on a sunny afternoon at the neighbors pool. I was sitting by the side of the pool with his mom, Michelle Parker and we were talking with friends. He was on the other side of the table far from the waters edge. But somehow, he had quietly crawled to the edge of the pool and silently slipped in. There was no sound of splash and no struggle for help. Pools really are the “silent killers”. Fortunately, his mom noticed him lying face down in the water, she grabbed him from the pool, he was lying face down, without further ado and he was fine. It could have ended very differently.

The point is, that swim education and pool safety should be part of EVERY preschool’s curriculum. For over twenty years, here at Honey Bear Preschool and Child Care Center we have offered swimming lessons to all our students who qualify, in the summer. We keep the expense quite low and do not make any money on the program because we feel so strongly that all parents should get their children pool safe as soon as possible. Here are some grim statistics to motivate you:

  • In ten years nearly 14,000 Americans age 19 and younger drowned, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Five thousand of those cases were among children ages 1 to 4, and at least half of those deaths occurred in swimming pools.
  • While there is more widespread adoption of preventive strategies such as pool fencing and swimming lessons there is NO SUBSTITUTE for pool safety. This means making sure your children can fend for themselves when in water. Our classes, taught by licensed instructors at the YMCA offer the opportunity for parents to help protect their children in unforeseen circumstances.
  • The American Association of Pediatrics recommends swim lessons. A 2009 U.S. study found an 88 percent reduction in drowning risk in preschoolers ages 1 to 4 who had taken swimming lessons. A similar study conducted in China found that swimming lessons reduced drowning risk by 40 percent.

Make your child WATER SAFE and always be vigilant when they are near water. Sign your preschoolers up now for the summer of 2015 swimming lessons at Honey Bear Preschool and Child Care Center.
